Voila – a Kitchen

December 18, 2012

After 5 days and untold months of imagination, we have a kitchen! I can’t believe how great it looks, and even Mr. B has come around to admitting that the IKEA cabinets are pretty nice. His reaction to most of the construction was, “What is this? Whoa, that is pretty neat.” It took about 4 days to go from 0 kitchen to kitchen awesomeness (including the sink and dishwasher); we worked on it nights and over the weekend. We also have a big kitchen though, and needed to do some house-specific things like cutting the counter top to fit our wall.

Thursday night we separated the mountain of boxes into piles for each cabinet, and Mr. B put together a “test” cabinet.

After getting a feel for the how-to, on Friday night we started putting the frames of cabinets together. Mr. B decided it would be faster to install the drawer slides before making the cabinet box, and we also put together each drawer and set it aside. I don’t have a picture of the house at this point, but it was a total disaster. Saturday morning we started putting the frames in place. By Saturday night, all of the frames were in place and attached, and we had started prepping the counter top for cutting. We also went to Home Depot twice in under 4 hours.

Sunday was mostly spent on the counter top. I’ll talk about that more in another post since IKEA doesn’t really explain how to attach the counters. We also put in the drawers, mounted the sink into the counter top  and started to install the dishwasher.

Starting to look like a kitchen!

Starting to look like a kitchen!

Yesterday we wrapped up the project. By we, I mostly mean Mr. B and my brother. I occasionally handed people things and wandered aimlessly around going, “This looks great!” It really does though. Yes, it is a lot of kitchen and counter top, but I really wanted a kitchen that would let several people cook together, and make it easy to process food. Plus, if you want a lot of cabinets, you need a lot of counter. The interior of the drawers look sort of sad right now with random things tossed in and sliding around. It will take me a few weeks to get everything in the right place. Are you ready to see the finished product?
