Christmas Come Early

December 11, 2012

Can you guess what it is?

It’s our kitchen!

We decided that an IKEA kitchen would be the fastest (and cheapest) way to get a functional kitchen that we would be happy to use for many years. This would relieve Mr. B the stress of needing to make one ASAP after we close out the loan and will lend to general domestic bliss on my part. This is our current kitchen organization:

How lovely.

Somehow this system has managed to be less convenient than the camper, mostly because I tried to put all of our food in one box.

The cabinets haven’t been without issue, and we haven’t even started to try and decipher the no-word directions (here is a comic/depressing example from Esquire). We placed the order and got a tentative delivery date for December 10th – IKEA doesn’t ship things, so this was just an estimate of when a third party delivery service would deliver to us. A week later, IKEA called to say that (a) the limit on the credit card from our local bank was too low for the order, and (b) there was something “wrong” with our order (Mr. B took that call). I spent 3 hours on the phone with various IKEA desks trying to get it sorted out, ranging from one person telling me that the order was on file and we just needed a new credit card number to our order was gone and we needed to re-place it entirely. Oh, and the delivery date was pushed back to December 21st. GAH. I figured the cabinets would get here earlier than expected (Montana isn’t totally in the middle of nowhere – trucks do come here), and they did. However, the shipping company wanted to use a semi-trailer to make the delivery, which = no way on our property. They ended up renting a Uhaul (we payed for that on top of the shipping costs), but Uhauls don’t really have traction. We got our first big snow a few days ago, and there was no way that truck was going to make it up to our house. They had to park down by the camper and carry everything up here, and I just watched them spend 20 minutes trying to back out of our driveway. At least they were successful!

We’re hoping to have the cabinets, kitchen sink, and dishwasher (fingers crossed) installed by next week, which is when we’ll be hosting a 10 person family christmas in the house.

Can’t wait to see how it all looks when it’s said and done. Check out my page for any inspirations,

Loved the Esquire piece. Certainly Mr B can figure it all out.
