Plaster Mania

September 12, 2012

Readers – I am so far behind on posts, but the last few weeks were a whirlwind of plastering (and general life stuff). The last time I posted, we were just starting the scratch coat and now we are done with the brown coat! Not a lot to say except the usual about hard work and good help, so I’ll let the pictures show you what we’ve been up to.

We would never have finished the scratch coat without the 8 people who came out for a whole weekend to help us.

Initially, Mr. B was concerned about how we would reach the gables, but his ingenuity fixed the problem. All we needed was two scaffolds, one ladder, one ladder jack, and a 2 x 12.

We finished the scratch coat last Monday and started the brown coat last Friday when Mr. E came out for a visit. I’ll be honest: the scratch coat looked horrible. We didn’t spend a lot of time smoothing the exterior of the bales, so there were a lot of gaps and bumps. The scratch coat showed all of those flaws, but the brown coat just looks beautiful. You can still see the really big bumps from our structural iron Xs, but the overall appearance is lovely.

We were working so fast that we needed two mixers going non-stop to keep enough mud on hand.

Super Mom.

Once again, we never would have been able to finish the brown coat in four days without a lot of help. We got the whole clan together to work one day.

I can’t show you the real finished product right now though, because the plaster needs to be protected from sun and wind and the house looks like this:

The circus came to town.

In two weeks, we’ll be working on the finished coat! We still need to pick a color. We’re leaning towards one of the two on the left. What do you think?

I like the one 2nd from the left; a bit brighter which would reflect rather than absorb.
    Looking good!!
