A Few Neat Things

August 24, 2012

Happy Friday! To kick the weekend (almost weekend) off right, here are two neat new additions to the property.

1) The World’s Largest Weathervane (this claim was not confirmed with Guinness Book of Records)

My dad made this giant weathervane, drove it from Oregon, and he and Mr. B installed it last night. He even cut our initial into it. The installation was a little crazy – the post is really tall, so the tractor bucket was required.

You can’t see Mr. B’s “this is a terrible idea” face in this picture, but I’m pretty sure he was afraid of killing his father-in-law. In the end though it all worked out, and we have a weathervane merrily spinning around, just in time for todays 32 mph wind gusts.

2) The great room drywall is nearly done!

Most of the rooms feel much smaller with the drywall in, but the great room seems MASSIVE, especially the back wall. Not looking forward to painting this so much. I think we’re going to need a bigger scaffold.

3) I made potatoes!

This are Desiree potatoes from two plants in our garden. Considering how little attention I’ve given the garden this summer, and the many obstacles it’s faced (poor watering system, massive weed growth, general rockiness of the soil), I’m amazed that there was anything in there at all. And yet, here they are, normal sized potatoes and more than the one seed potato each plant started from. Desiree is a main crop, red-skinned variety that is relatively waxy. I didn’t really know what that meant until we ate them last night along with a “standard” brown potato from the grocery. Readers, let me tell you, I am not much of a potato fan, but these were soooo good. Since they are waxy, they have firm flesh and are not “fluffy” or, as I would say, mealy. So tasty.
