Still Alive

July 18, 2011

Readers- Sorry for the week off. Mr. B’s family was here visiting, and we worked ourselves silly. I have photos to share, but the camera cord has temporarily disappeared.

It feels very strange being back at work. During the week that the family was here we rarely left the property except to pick up building supplies or food. We were working between 10 and 15 hours a day, even through the heat. I feel like we were stuck in the doldrums (see above). This is an area around the equator where the air is still and it is difficult for ships to sail. The entire week felt sort of like that. We started off highly ambitious and ended completely spent, no where close to where we wanted to be. This is mostly due to our inexperience – Mr. B and I have no idea what is a reasonable amount of time for each task and this is compounded by our overall inexperience in building. No matter how many times I told myself that we were making progress though, it still felt like we were throwing ourselves against a wall and not getting anywhere.

Sorry for the somewhat depressed post. I feel like Rip Van Winkle – a week on the calendar turned into moths away. We did make great progress and most of the thanks for that goes to Mr. B’s family. They worked just as hard as us, through heat, rain, hunger and exhaustion. They fed us, did our laundry, did the dirty work, and kept our spirits up. No one will ever help you as much as your family will, and they will act like it is the best thing in the world.
